7 Signs Your Garage Door Needs Repair

Most garage door failures don't happen without warning — the door usually tells you something is wrong days or weeks before it actually breaks down. Here are the seven signs we see most often on service calls in Central Florida, in roughly the order they tend to show up.
1. A Loud Bang From the Garage
This is almost always a torsion spring breaking. It's loud enough to sound like a gunshot in an enclosed garage. Don't try to open the door with the opener after this — call for a same-day repair.
2. The Door Feels Heavy When Lifted by Hand
A door that's hard to lift manually, with the opener disconnected, has lost spring tension, whether from wear or a partially failed spring.
3. Grinding, Squeaking, or Rattling Sounds
Usually worn rollers, dry hinges, or loose hardware — often fixable with lubrication and tightening if caught early.
4. The Door Closes and Then Reverses
This is typically a misaligned or dirty photo-eye safety sensor near the floor, not a mechanical problem.
5. Visible Fraying on the Cables
Frayed strands near the bottom bracket mean the cable is close to failing, which can let one side of the door drop suddenly.
6. The Door Is Off-Track or Crooked
Even slightly crooked movement means a roller has jumped the track or a track bracket has loosened — this gets worse quickly if the door keeps running.
7. The Opener Runs but the Door Barely Moves
This points to a spring problem, not the opener — the motor isn't strong enough to lift a door with failed springs, no matter how new the opener is.
If you're seeing more than one of these at once, stop using the door and call for a same-day inspection — several of these get more expensive and more dangerous the longer they're ignored.
